The Dolphin (Pub)

Farringdon local pub

Contents

The Dolphin is a public house on Ashdown Road in Farringdon, Sunderland, Tyne and Wear. It opened in 1960, shortly after the principal construction of Farringdon’s municipal housing estate, and was built as one of the neighbourhood facilities serving the new suburb. The Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) describes it as a pub in the centre of Farringdon Estate and records 1960 as its opening year.[1]

The premises have also been known as the Dolphin Hotel, a name retained in a number of business and directory records.[2] Its address is Ashdown Road, Sunderland, SR3 3HT.[1][3]

Establishment on Farringdon estate

The Dolphin’s history is closely connected with the creation of Farringdon itself. Sunderland Corporation constructed the principal Farringdon housing estate between 1952 and 1957, providing approximately 2,000 dwellings on what had previously been farmland associated with Farringdon Hall.[4] The pub followed in 1960, making it part of the first generation of commercial and social facilities established for the new population rather than a surviving public house from the area’s rural period.[1]

Its location on Ashdown Road placed it within the estate’s deliberately planned road system. Farringdon’s streets were predominantly given names beginning with A, including Ashdown Road, Allendale Road, Antwerp Road, Appleby Road and Anthony Road. Sunderland City Council’s adopted-street records continue to identify Ashdown Road and these adjoining streets as part of Farringdon.[5]

The Dolphin should therefore be distinguished from Sunderland’s older nineteenth-century and early twentieth-century public houses. Its origins belong specifically to the post-war expansion of municipal housing into the countryside south-west of the older built-up town.

Building and use

The Dolphin is a purpose-built suburban public house rather than a converted earlier dwelling. Its relatively isolated building, surrounding open space and car-parking provision are characteristic of the neighbourhood pub developments constructed on large twentieth-century housing estates.

CAMRA records the pub as having a garden, parking, live music, events and games facilities. It is also situated close to bus services through Farringdon.[1] The premises are officially classified for regulatory purposes as a pub, bar or nightclub.[3]

The establishment has at various times been described as the Dolphin Hotel, although there is no evidence that the modern premises functioned as a conventional residential hotel. Business directories using that title give the same Ashdown Road address and telephone number as the Dolphin public house.[2]

Brewery associations

The Dolphin has changed brewery association during its history. Local recollections record a period in which it operated as a Whitbread house, although sufficiently authoritative documentation has not been located to establish the precise dates of Whitbread ownership or tenancy. The present CAMRA record identifies its operator as Camerons, the Hartlepool-based brewery and pub company.[1]

Because the ownership and leasehold history of individual public houses can be complex, brewery branding should not necessarily be interpreted as proof of freehold ownership. CAMRA’s January 2026 record lists both the leasehold and freehold owners as unknown while identifying Camerons as the operator.[1]

Role within Farringdon

The Dolphin became one of the purpose-built social venues serving the population established at Farringdon during the 1950s. Other neighbourhood institutions included Farringdon’s schools, shopping areas and Farringdon Social Club.

The survival of the Dolphin is notable because many comparable estate pubs and clubs in Sunderland have closed as drinking and leisure patterns changed. Farringdon Social Club, for example, closed in the twenty-first century, leaving the Dolphin as one of the estate’s surviving purpose-built licensed venues.

Its position on Ashdown Road has consequently remained substantially unchanged since the early decades of the estate. Unlike Farringdon Hall, the farms which preceded the housing development, and several later community buildings, the pub continues to perform the function for which it was constructed.

Food hygiene and regulation

The Food Standards Agency records the premises as The Dolphin, Ashdown Road, Sunderland, SR3 3HT. At an inspection undertaken by Sunderland City Council on 13 April 2018, the business received the highest food-hygiene rating of 5, “very good”.[3]

The assessment found standards described as good in all three inspection categories: hygienic handling of food; cleanliness and condition of the premises; and management of food safety.[3] The rating relates specifically to conditions found at the 2018 inspection and should not be interpreted as a current inspection result indefinitely.

The Dolphin in the twenty-first century

The Dolphin remained in operation in 2026. CAMRA’s listing, last updated on 17 January 2026, recorded the pub as open and operated by Camerons. At that date it was not recorded as offering cask ale.[1]

The same record lists live music, a garden, parking, events and games among its facilities and identifies the Stagecoach number 3 service among nearby bus connections.[1] Independent business listings continue to identify the establishment at the same Ashdown Road address.[2][3]

The Dolphin therefore represents a surviving element of the original social infrastructure of post-war Farringdon. Opened only a few years after completion of the main 1952–57 housing programme, its history is principally that of an estate pub created for a newly built municipal suburb, rather than that of an older Sunderland inn subsequently surrounded by housing.[1][4]
